At Upton Cross Primary School in the Early Years we promote physical and emotional health by equipping pupils with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage we encourage children to eat a healthy range of foods and understand the need for variety in food. In Nursery we have a breakfast club and a snack table; here we provide the children with a range of healthy food choices throughout the Nursery session. Throughout the session an adult supports at this table encouraging children to visit the table and develop their independence in feeding themselves.
Our Nursery has been awarded the Newham 3 Star Healthy Eating Award and to receive this we had to work closely with a child nutritionist who supported us in creating our menus. In Reception we have a snack table where the children have access to milk, water and a range of fruit and vegetables throughout the day. We support all children to develop an understanding of good practices with regard to exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene and how this can contribute to good health. Children are provided with the opportunity to take part in regular physical exercise and are provided with a healthy diet. We regularly talk about ways to keep healthy and safe. In our school children are taught the importance for good health.
At Upton Cross we recognise that we can help children learn about their health and develop their motivation and self-respect to make healthy choices. The benefits go beyond health - we know that when children are healthy and happy at school, they can achieve more. Healthy Schools London is a programme that has helped us go further, and support our children and staff. Upton Cross is very proud to have achieved a Healthy Schools London Bronze award for reviewing its practice in promoting health and wellbeing.
